Description
In 1790, 25-year-old George Sandeman, the son of a wealthy Scottish carpenter, asked his father for a loan of 300 pounds. His aim was to set up as a wine merchant in London. George Sandeman subsequently founded the Sandeman company, which later became one of the world’s leading suppliers of port and sherry.
From the very beginning, Sandeman specialised in the production and trade of port and sherry. Unlike today, he did not run his business from his own offices, but from Tom’s Coffee House on Birchin Lane in London. At that time, business deals were often concluded on the basis of a ‘gentleman’s word’. George Sandeman quickly gained an excellent reputation, which continues to characterise the Sandeman company to this day.
Sandeman 20 Years Old Tawny Port is a masterful blend of the Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional grape varieties. Produced using the traditional Port wine method, the hand-picked grapes are destemmed and gently crushed before fermentation to extract the finest flavours. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature with maceration on the grape skins. At the ideal moment, wine alcohol is added, carefully selected by the winemaker to achieve the perfect balance of sweetness and structure.
After harvest, the wines remain in the Douro Valley until spring and are then aged in the centuries-old oak casks at the Sandeman cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Over the years, the wines used for this special Tawny Port are carefully tasted, analysed and perfected. The final blend consists of a selection of wines that have been aged for between 15 and 40 years. The result is an expressive 20 Years OLD TAWNY.
Tasting Note
Deep ruby to amber in the glass. Rich and elegant on the nose, with notes of dried apricots. Elegant on the palate, with dried fruit, hints of honey, vanilla, nuts and spices. A long-lasting finish.
Residual sugar: 115 g/l
Serving temperature: 12–16 °C
Served slightly chilled, this port is a stylish accompaniment to foie gras, a rich cheese quiche, savoury vol-au-vents or a seafood gratin. It pairs perfectly with desserts such as crème brûlée, tarte Tatin or dried fruit, and is also ideal as an elegant aperitif.
