Raki is a traditional aniseed-flavoured spirit that originates primarily in Turkey. It is made from distilled grapes and derives its characteristic flavour from the addition of aniseed. Raki is considered Turkey’s national drink and is often enjoyed in social gatherings.

When raki is mixed with water, it turns milky white. This so-called "lion's effect" occurs because the essential oils of anise disperse in the water, making the raki appear cloudy. This characteristic is typical for high-quality anise spirits.

Traditionally, raki is served with cold water and ice. A mixing ratio of around 1:1 is customary, with the water being added to the glass only after the raki. Many connoisseurs also enjoy raki with a selection of small appetisers, known as meze.

Raki pairs particularly well with meze, grilled fish, seafood, lamb dishes, cheese, and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern specialities. Its subtle hint of aniseed complements spicy and aromatic dishes particularly well.

Among the best-known raki brands are Yeni Raki, Tekirdag Raki and Beylerbeyi Raki. They differ in terms of production methods, ageing and the intensity of the aniseed aroma, amongst other things, and offer a wide range of taste experiences for both beginners and connoisseurs.

Raki is ideally served well chilled in a slender raki glass. It can be enjoyed neat or, in the traditional way, with cold water and ice. For an authentic taste experience, it is recommended to drink raki slowly and in a convivial atmosphere.
