The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky 90th Anniversary is a special anniversary edition of the exceptional Japanese Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky, presented in a gift box to mark the 90th anniversary of Nikka Whisky. The whisky is made from 100 per cent malted barley, but differs fundamentally from a classic single malt in terms of distillation. Instead of pot stills, Nikka uses traditional Coffey stills – continuous stills whose design was patented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830. Nikka’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru, became familiar with this distillation method as early as 1919 during his stay in Scotland. Nikka eventually imported the first Coffey still from Scotland to Japan in 1963, followed by the second in 1966. Although these historic stills are considered comparatively labour-intensive to operate, they are prized for the distinct character of the raw materials and the creamy texture of the distillates they produce.


Nikka Coffey Malt was developed in 2013 as part of the Japanese producer’s ongoing experimentation. After the whisky – produced from 100 per cent malted barley – has been distilled in Coffey stills, it is matured in older casks, which enhances its pronounced malty character, complexity and silky texture. A distinctive feature is its classification: despite being made exclusively from malted barley, Coffey Malt is classified not as a malt whisky but as a grain whisky due to the continuous-still distillation process. The 90th Anniversary Edition is available at 45 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle, complete with an anniversary gift box, thus combining Nikka’s unusual Coffey still production with the brand’s 90th anniversary.

Tasting Note

Colour: Gold to amber.

Nose: Fruity and spicy with distinct citrus notes, Williams pear, vanilla and pepper, complemented by balsamic and subtle hints of coffee.

Palate: Creamy and complex with sweet mandarins and oranges, coffee, pralines and vanilla, followed by plums, mirabelle plums and apricots.

Finish: Long-lasting, spicy and sweet with fruity, malty and delicately toasted nuances.

The Nikka Coffey Malt 90th Anniversary is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, although a few drops of still water can further bring out the fruity and malty components. It can also be served over a large ice cube or as a Japanese highball with soda and ice. Culinary pairings include dark chocolate, roasted nuts, desserts featuring orange or apricot, and mild hard cheeses, which complement its creamy, fruity character. Thanks to the 90th Anniversary gift box, this edition is also particularly well-suited as a gift for Nikka Whisky enthusiasts and collectors of Japanese whisky bottlings.
