What is Coconut Milk? What is Cream of Coconut?

Before we get to the practical part of mixing, let's first clarify some terms so that we are on the same page.

Coconut Milk

When we recently showcased extraordinary bottle designs from our range, we noted how perfectly the ingenious human invention of glass is suited for sterile storage of precious liquids. However, nature has also developed some equally astonishing solutions for this purpose, which brings us to the coconut, one of the most remarkable examples in this regard.

The coconut is the well-known fruit of the tropical coconut palm, which we naturally associate immediately with endless beaches on warm seas. However, the name "coconut" is a misnomer, as it is not a nut but actually a drupe. This fruit has been used by people in tropical regions for millennia as a valuable source of food and raw materials. In addition to using the shell as fuel, just to name one example of the versatile usability of the coconut palm and its fruit, this applies especially to the delicious white flesh of the nut and the almost transparent coconut water safely "stored" inside. This is either drunk raw as a substitute for drinking water or fermented into coconut wine.

However, coconut water is not the same as coconut milk – the latter is not formed inside the nut, but is made by mixing pureed coconut flesh with water and pressing the resulting puree through a cloth to remove solid components. This yields a milky liquid that usually contains between 15 and 25% coconut fat and is commonly available in cans. This form of preservation as a long-life product typically results in the coconut fat separating from the water after some time and settling on top of the liquid as "coconut cream" or "coconut whipped cream." This completely normal process does not affect the quality of the coconut milk. However, this solid component should not be confused with Cream of Coconut, which we will now turn our attention to!

Cream of Coconut

Cream of Coconut consists of thickened coconut fat and coconut water sweetened with cane sugar. It is also of great interest for our topic, as this cream, like "real" coconut milk, can be used for preparing cocktails with coconut milk. We recommend Coco Tara Cream of Coconut 0.33 l, which you can order in our shop. This delicately melting and smooth recipe with carefully controlled pulp from the Dominican Republic can easily be used for the recipes presented here and gives them the desired Caribbean flair.

At this point, the question arises as to which option you should choose for your coconut milk cocktail. The answer likely lies in your personal preferences: coconut milk is more liquid than cream of coconut and less sweet due to the absence of added sugar. Those who prefer something sweeter or a creamier cocktail will know how to decide. But no matter how you decide – both alternatives offer what makes coconut so popular in cocktails: it is considered healthy and is, of course, incredibly delicious, because ultimately, the characteristic taste of the tropical fruit is something very special – especially in combination with pineapple, which makes a truly classic pair. By the way, in our recipes, we assume the use of coconut milk.
