In addition to individual taste preferences, there are a number of objective quality characteristics by which first-class and high-quality spirits can be distinguished from inferior ones. Of course, personal taste plays the most important role when choosing a tequila variety. Apart from that, however, spirits can also be assessed and distinguished from one another based on criteria that can be compared even before purchase. Especially if you want an inexpensive tequila, you should consider the following factors before buying:
- Raw materials: Good tequila must be made from 100% agave. Only blue Weber agave may be used for tequila.
- Aging: The longer tequila ages, the smoother and more distinctive it tastes. If you want to drink tequila neat, you should opt for a Reposado or Añejo . For many mixed drinks and shots, a Tequila Silver is more suitable.
- Label: The label should state the ingredients, 100% agave, and the length of storage. In addition, the NOM and DOT identification numbers assigned by the Mexican regulatory authority CRT should be on the labels.
- Aromas: When tasting tequila, various aromas of vanilla, chocolate, fruits and spices , as well as almonds, caramel, honey and many others can be distinguished and noted in a taste profile.
