Today’s Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) emerged from the merger of numerous historic distilleries located along the Demerara River in Guyana. Over the course of the 20th century, these independent companies were gradually brought together – a process facilitated by economic restructuring and government consolidation. The aim was to bring the country’s diverse rum production under one roof and make it more efficient.

These mergers ultimately led to the establishment of DDL, which today operates all remaining historic stills and is solely responsible for the production of Demerara rum in Guyana. The El Dorado Rum brand, launched in 1992, became the flagship of this development and reflects the diversity, craftsmanship and historical depth of the united distilling traditions.
