Laphroaig uses peaty water and barley, some of which comes from its own malting plant. Distillation takes place in various traditional stills. The whisky matures in a combination of ex-bourbon, sherry and virgin oak casks in warehouses right on the coast – which gives it salty, maritime aromas. Maturation in smaller casks such as quarter casks further intensifies the influence of the wood.
