Josef Umathum has been one of Austria’s leading winemakers since the 1990s. His Kirschgarten, Hallebühl and Traminer wines, in particular, consistently receive top ratings (Falstaff ‘Winemaker of the Year’ 1990). Weingut Umathum is a member of the prestigious Burgenland Wineries association.

A modern, clean aesthetic in architectural and label design. The style combines tradition with timeless elegance and reflects the diversity of the soil within the bottle.

All the grapes are hand-picked and harvested with a minimal yield. Vinification is carried out gently, with ageing typically lasting over three years in wooden barrels. Compost made from cattle manure, biodynamic cultivation and the use of the estate’s own solar-generated electricity underpin the sustainable approach.

Biodynamics (Demeter), soil management, composting, solar energy and water management are integral components. Umathum takes responsibility for the climate and the region – including through the reintroduction of old vines.

With around 45 hectares of vineyards on Lake Neusiedl, Umathum focuses on local red wine varieties such as Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch (85%), complemented by dry white wines. Notable vineyards include Haideboden, Ried Hallebühl, Vom Stein and the terraced vineyards in the Joiser Kirschgarten – terroirs each with their own distinct character.
