Description
Peychaud’s Aromatic Cocktail Bitter is one of the best-known and most traditional bitter specialities in the world. Originally developed in the 19th century in New Orleans by Antoine Amedée Peychaud, a pharmacist of Haitian origin, this aromatic bitter is now one of the indispensable classics of international bar culture. It is particularly closely associated with the famous Sazerac cocktail, in which it plays a central role – not only in terms of flavour, but also historically.
Peychaud’s Bitter is still produced according to a secret original recipe, which relies on selected herbs, roots and botanical ingredients. Compared to other cocktail bitters, such as Angostura, Peychaud’s is distinguished by its characteristic reddish colour and its slightly sweet, aniseed-tinged aroma with floral and bitter notes. Its alcohol content of 35 % vol. makes it not only long-lasting but also intense and economical to use.
The compact 0.148-litre bottle is easy to measure out and is ideal for professional bar use as well as for ambitious home bars. Whether for classic drinks or creative original concoctions – this bitter lends cocktails complexity, depth and aromatic balance.
Tasting Note
Colour: Deep red with a clear structure.
Nose: Spicy and herbaceous, with notes of aniseed, clove, cherry and a hint of liquorice.
Palate: Slightly sweet, followed by a bitter-spicy herbal note, combined with cinnamon, wormwood and subtle floral accents.
Finish: Long-lasting and aromatic, with lingering bitterness, hints of spice and a gentle warmth in the aftertaste.
Peychaud’s Aromatic Cocktail Bitter is an essential ingredient in classic American cocktails, particularly the Sazerac, where, together with rye whisky, sugar and absinthe, it creates an iconic flavour experience. It is also ideal for variations on the Old Fashioned, Manhattan or champagne cocktails, where an elegant, bitter depth is required. This bitter also finds versatile use in modern mixology – for example, in aperitif-style creations, barrel-aged cocktails or even as a flavour contrast in dessert sauces or praline fillings. A must-have for any well-stocked bar and a product with genuine cult status amongst bartenders worldwide.
