The Glenlivet SPECTRA Single Malt Scotch Whisky Set presents three different interpretations of the characteristically smooth and fruity house style of the historic Glenlivet Distillery in Speyside. The set contains three 0.2-litre bottles of single malt Scotch whisky, each bottled at 40 per cent ABV. SPECTRA was originally conceived as a sensory experiment: The three bottlings were initially presented without any age statement, detailed cask information or official tasting notes, so that whisky enthusiasts could discover the differences for themselves. It was only when the experiment was revealed that the individual cask concepts and flavour profiles of the three variants were disclosed.


Each of the three The Glenlivet SPECTRA bottlings takes a distinct approach. SPECTRA 01 was matured entirely in first-fill sherry butts and first-fill American oak barrels. SPECTRA 02 was finished in ex-peated casks, adding a subtle smoky note to the classic Glenlivet style. SPECTRA 03, on the other hand, was finished in double-charred casks and emphasises sweet, creamy notes and flavours more strongly influenced by toasted wood. Thanks to these three distinct cask profiles, the 3 x 0.2-litre tasting set with gift box is ideal for directly comparing the influence of different cask types on a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky.

Tasting Note

Colour: Golden to amber hues, depending on the bottling.

Nose: SPECTRA 01 with ripe orchard fruits and tropical notes; SPECTRA 02 with pear, crisp apple, citrus zest and a hint of smoke; SPECTRA 03 with soft, creamy vanilla toffee.

Palate: SPECTRA 01 with peach, pear in syrup, vanilla and floral notes; SPECTRA 02 is fruity with campfire smoke, orange marmalade and creamy vanilla toffee; SPECTRA 03 with honey, cinnamon, pear in dark chocolate and a spicy hint of liquorice.

Finish: SPECTRA 01 with marzipan, fragrant honey and fresh hazelnuts; SPECTRA 02 long-lasting and spicy with delicate layers of smoke; SPECTRA 03 long-lasting with sweet vanilla and a pleasantly tart spiciness.

The Glenlivet SPECTRA Set is primarily designed as a whisky tasting experience featuring three distinct cask profiles and should ideally be enjoyed neat at room temperature. We recommend tasting them in the order SPECTRA 01, SPECTRA 02 and SPECTRA 03, sipping a little still water between each to cleanse the palate. These pair well with subtle accompaniments such as almonds, hazelnuts, mild hard cheese or dark chocolate, which do not overpower the comparison of the whiskies.
