The West Cork MARITIME Single Malt Irish Whiskey PORT CASK FINISHED is a limited-edition release from Ireland, produced by West Cork Distillers in Skibbereen, County Cork. The single malt is triple-distilled and initially matured in first-fill bourbon casks. It is then finished in selected port casks from Quinta da Boeira in Portugal, which adds an extra fruity and spicy cask character to the bourbon cask maturation. The whisky is bottled at a robust 46 per cent ABV, with no chill filtration or colouring added. This ensures the bottling retains its original cask character and fits seamlessly into West Cork’s Maritime Range as a distinct variant.

The design of the West Cork Maritime Port Cask also reflects the distillery’s close connection to the Irish Atlantic coast. The specially designed, spherical bottle is reminiscent of historic glass buoys used in fishing nets and features a slightly offset spout, designed to aid controlled pouring. The Maritime Range comprises various single malts with different cask finishes, including port, rum, sherry and virgin oak. It is precisely the combination of first-fill bourbon cask maturation and a Quinta da Boeira port cask finish that gives this limited edition a distinct place within the range. At 0.7 litres, 46 per cent ABV, with natural colour and no chill filtration, this bottling is aimed at connoisseurs of fruity Irish single malts and distinctive cask finishes.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm amber with reddish-golden highlights.

Nose: Dried fruit, vanilla and toffee, accompanied by nutmeg, black pepper and subtle oak notes.

Palate: Sweetish and smooth, with dried fruit, caramel and vanilla, as well as a subtle, fruity port-like character.

Finish: Long-lasting, velvety and fruity, with elegant spice and subtle oak notes.

The West Cork Maritime Port Cask Finish is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C and can be diluted with a few drops of still water if desired. It pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or mature cheese, which complement the fruity, spicy cask character. Figs, dates or fruit cake also harmonise well with the profile shaped by the port cask finish. This limited-edition Maritime bottling is also ideal for Irish whisky tastings and for directly comparing different cask finishes.
