Planteray Rum BARBADOS XO 20th Anniversary is a premium Barbados rum, originally created to mark the 20th anniversary of Alexandre Gabriel’s tenure as Master Blender. It is based on selected, long-aged rums from Barbados, produced at the West Indies Rum Distillery. Both pot stills and column stills are used in the process, allowing distillates with different structures to be combined. A distinctive feature is Planteray’s characteristic double-ageing method: First, the rums are aged for several years under tropical conditions in Barbados in ex-bourbon casks. They are then transported to France, where they are further refined in the cellars of Maison Ferrand in former French oak cognac casks.

The Planteray Barbados XO 20th Anniversary is then blended from components aged to varying degrees to create a complex blended rum and bottled at 40 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle. The combination of tropical ageing in the Caribbean and continental secondary ageing in France defines the distinctive style of this well-known Planteray expression. Ex-bourbon and Ferrand cognac casks each contribute different influences to the blend. The former brand name, Plantation Rum, has since been replaced by Planteray Rum, whilst the Barbados XO 20th Anniversary continues as an established release within the range. Its combination of Barbadian origins, pot still and column still distillates, double ageing and the influence of French cognac casks makes it a distinctive representative of the house.

Tasting Note

Colour: Dark amber with mahogany-coloured highlights.

Nose: Intense and complex, with vanilla, coconut and ripe tropical fruits, accompanied by cocoa and spicy oak notes.

Palate: Full-bodied and smooth with banana, vanilla and caramel, complemented by toasted coconut, cocoa and warm spicy notes.

Finish: Long-lasting and harmonious with vanilla, tropical fruits, cocoa and subtly spiced oak.

The Planteray Barbados XO 20th Anniversary is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature or over a large ice cube. It pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, desserts featuring banana or coconut, and mature cheeses, which complement the tropical and oak-influenced notes. The Barbados XO is also ideal for high-quality, spirit-forward rum cocktails, though enjoying it neat is particularly recommended. As an established double-aged Barbados rum, it is also well-suited to rum tastings and makes an excellent gift for connoisseurs of matured Caribbean rums.
