Unofficially, whisky has been distilled at the Ardbeg Distillery since 1794 – in 1815, the distillery was purchased by John McDougall and officially opened under the name Ardbeg.

‘Ardbeg’ comes from the Gaelic and translates roughly as ‘little hill’.

The distillery is situated on the south coast of the Islay whisky region.

Over 25 years ago, in 1997, the Ardbeg 17 Years Old The Ultimate Committee Exclusive was one of the first bottles to leave the distillery following its reopening. This unusually delicate, yet unmistakably Ardbeg whisky quickly won the hearts of the Ardbeg Committee and set an exceptional standard for the future.

When the whisky was discontinued in 2004, many believed they would never see it again. Yet, behind the scenes, its return was being carefully prepared. Dr Bill Lumsden, the Master Distiller, has meticulously modelled the new bottling on the original, recreating the flavour profile note for note and bottling it, as before, at 40 per cent ABV to continue the tradition.

Tasting Note

Colour: Bronze.

Nose: Fresh, elegant, hints of pine resin, notes of aniseed, sweet peat smoke, barley malt, lavender soap.

Palate: Creamy, mild, peaty smoke, fennel, aniseed, café latte.

Finish: Long-lasting, robust oak, tar, cocoa powder.
