Penderyn RICH OAK Single Malt Welsh Whisky, 46% vol., comes from Wales and is part of the Penderyn Distillery’s Gold Range, which is renowned for its fruity and elegant whisky style. The distillate is produced, amongst other things, in the distillery’s distinctive copper Faraday still, which gives it its characteristic light, clear profile. For the Penderyn Rich Oak, maturation begins in carefully selected ex-bourbon casks, before the whisky undergoes further refinement in rejuvenated European ex-wine casks. These re-conditioned oak casks impart a more intense oaky influence, as well as spicy and sweet notes, to the whisky. The result combines the fruity Penderyn style with a distinctly more pronounced oaky character, making Rich Oak one of the Welsh distiller’s more cask-influenced expressions.

At 46% ABV, Penderyn Rich Oak Welsh Single Malt has enough body to allow both its creamy texture and its complex cask character to come through clearly. Dark chocolate fudge, green apple and tropical fruits meet vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, toffee and distinctive oak, creating a balanced interplay between fruit, sweetness and spice. This Welsh single malt whisky is also certified kosher and has now become a permanent fixture in the Gold Range’s core range. Presented in a 0.7-litre bottle, the Penderyn RICH OAK 46% is a characterful Welsh whisky in which the combination of ex-bourbon maturation and an intense European oak cask finish takes centre stage.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm gold.

Nose: Complex, with notes of dark chocolate fudge, cinnamon and pepper, followed by green apple, mango, banana and guava.

Palate: Rich and creamy with vanilla, oak and cinnamon, complemented by nutty toffee and a harmonious fruit sweetness.

Finish: Long-lasting and smooth with creamy vanilla, subtle oaky notes and a gentle lingering sweetness.

Penderyn Rich Oak reveals its complex cask character particularly well when enjoyed neat at room temperature or with a few drops of still water. Mature Cheddar, roasted hazelnuts or air-dried ham pair superbly with its combination of oak, vanilla and fruit. For a sweet finish, apple cake, banana bread, toffee desserts or dark chocolate are ideal. In a nosing glass, the tropical fruit notes and the spicy Rich Oak cask character in particular can gradually unfold.
