The Douglas Laing Big Peat 10 Years Old Red Wine Cask The Winter Edition 2026 is a limited-edition Islay blended malt Scotch whisky that combines the characteristically smoky style of the Big Peat range with the influence of red wine casks. For Big Peat, the independent Scottish bottler Douglas Laing blends exclusively single malts from the island of Islay. The Winter Edition bears a full age statement of 10 years and, thanks to the selected red wine casks, gains an additional fruity dimension that contrasts with the blend’s maritime peat smoke. This special edition is bottled at a robust 48% ABV and comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with a matching gift box.

The Big Peat series forms part of Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts range and was developed to bring together the typical character of the Scottish whisky region of Islay in a blended malt. The focus is traditionally on peaty smoke, maritime influences and a robust Islay character. In the Winter Edition 2026, the maturation – or rather the influence of the casks – through red wine casks expands this profile to include darker fruit and wine notes. The combination of 10 years’ maturation, Islay single malts and red wine casks makes this seasonal bottling a unique interpretation of Big Peat and particularly appealing to lovers of smoky whiskies with an additional wine-cask influence.

Tasting Note

Colour: Golden amber with reddish-coppery highlights.

Nose: Intense peaty smoke and maritime notes, accompanied by dark berries, ripe fruit, spices and gentle oak.

Palate: Full-bodied and smoky, with dark fruit and spicy peat, complemented by red berries, oak and salty, maritime hints.

Finish: Long-lasting, smoky and warming, with peat, dark fruit, spices and a dry, lingering oak finish.

The Big Peat 10 Years Old Red Wine Cask Winter Edition 2026 is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C, although a few drops of still water can further emphasise the contrast between the peaty smoke and the fruit. It pairs well with smoked meats, strong hard cheeses, roasted nuts or dark chocolate with red berries. Game dishes or a dessert featuring dark chocolate and cherries also complement the red wine cask character perfectly.
