Isle of Raasay Na Sia Single Cask Series Bordeaux Red Wine Peated Single Malt 60% ABV 0.7l in a gift box
The Isle of RAASAY Na Sia Single Cask Series Bordeaux Red Wine Peated Single Malt is a distinctive, peated single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Raasay. It forms part of the Na Sia Single Cask Series, whose name is derived from Gaelic and means ‘the six’. The series showcases, one by one, the six cask types that form an important foundation for the distinctive whisky style of the Isle of Raasay Distillery. In this variant, peated Scottish single malt meets a Bordeaux red wine cask that previously held several vintages of Bordeaux wine. The French oak casks used impart a distinctive wine character and additional structure to the whisky. It is produced from 100 per cent Scottish malted barley and bottled at a robust 60 per cent ABV.
The combination of peated smoke and Bordeaux Red Wine Cask is one of the most exciting cask variations in the Na-Sia range. During maturation, the cask, which has been characterised by the red wine, imparts an increasingly reddish colour to the whisky, as well as intense fruit and spice notes. The Bordeaux casks are made from European oak, specifically Quercus petraea and Quercus robur, whose tannins and spicy character complement the dark fruitiness of the former red wine cask. Typical of this type of cask are notes of dark berries, plums and cherries, which interplay with the smoky character of the distillate. The Raasay Na Sia Bordeaux Red Wine Peated Single Malt is not chill-filtered and is bottled without any colouring. The 0.7-litre bottle with a gift box is therefore particularly aimed at connoisseurs of full-bodied, cask-influenced and smoky island whiskies.
Tasting Note
Colour: Dark gold with reddish-copper highlights.
Nose: Dark berries, plums and cherries blend with raisins, spicy oak and subtle peat smoke.
Palate: Full-bodied and complex, with dark fruits, dried fruits and notes of red wine, accompanied by spicy tannins and distinctive smoke.
Finish: Long-lasting and warming, with dark fruit, oaky spice, dry tannins and lingering peat smoke.
The Isle of Raasay Na Sia Bordeaux Red Wine Peated Single Malt is best enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C; however, with an alcohol content of 60 per cent, a few drops of still water can reveal additional facets. It pairs well with mature hard cheeses, smoked meats, game dishes or dark chocolate, which complement both the smokiness and the influence of the red wine cask. Desserts featuring plums, cherries or dark berries also make a suitable accompaniment. This bottling is particularly interesting for whisky tastings where the influence of different cask types on peated single malts is to be directly compared.
