Description
Ondjaba The Namibian Whisky Signature Edition No. 2 is an exceptional whisky from Namibia, produced at the Erongo Mountain Winery, which consistently combines regional influences with unconventional whisky-making techniques. It is based on a triple-grain blend, which includes, amongst other things, Mahangu millet, a traditional Namibian grain. A particularly distinctive feature of Ondjaba is the use of elephant dung for smoking instead of traditional peat, which gives the grain a subtle, earthy-smoky character. For the Signature Edition No. 2, this is followed by a complex maturation process under Namibia’s warm climatic conditions in a combination of virgin oak, red wine casks and brandy casks.
With a robust 51% ABV in the 0.7-litre bottle, the Ondjaba Signature Edition #2 presents itself as a particularly intense interpretation of the Namibian whisky style. The different types of cask impart oak spice, structure and additional fruity notes to the distillate, whilst mahangu and the unusual smoking process emphasise its regional identity. The whisky is not chill-filtered, ensuring that its original character is preserved as fully as possible. The Erongo Mountain Winery was also named Africa Whisky Distillery of the Year 2024. With its triple-grain recipe, Namibian Mahangu millet, exceptional smoking method and complex cask maturation, this Signature Edition No. 2 is aimed particularly at whisky connoisseurs seeking distinctive bottlings beyond the classic regions of origin.
Tasting Note
Colour: Deep rusty brown.
Nose: Toasted Mahangu grain with warm oak and vanilla, accompanied by nutty notes and a subtle, earthy smokiness.
Palate: Full-bodied and robust with pronounced cereal notes and spicy oak, complemented by subtle fruit sweetness and a harmoniously integrated smoky note.
Finish: Long-lasting and warming, with dry oak, delicate wood and a subtle, elegantly lingering smokiness.
The Ondjaba Signature Edition No. 2 is best served neat at room temperature in a nosing glass. Due to its robust 51% ABV, a few drops of still water can open up the structure and allow the cereal, cask and smoky notes in particular to come through more clearly. Culinary pairings include grilled beef, game, hearty BBQ dishes or mature hard cheeses, which complement its spicy character. Roasted nuts or dark chocolate also make suitable accompaniments to this unusual Namibian whisky.
