The Planteray Rum FIJI 2019 Coffee Liqueur Cask Finish is an exceptional single cask bottling from Fiji, produced from molasses by the Rum Co. of Fiji. Fermentation takes four to five days before distillation takes place in a column still. The distillate is from the 2019 vintage and subsequently undergoes the multi-stage maturation process characteristic of Planteray. First, the rum is aged for four years in bourbon casks under tropical conditions. This is followed by continental Lager in France, where it spends a further five months in Ferrand casks. This combination of tropical and continental Lager forms the basis for the complex character of this limited edition.


The Planteray Fiji 2019 Single Cask derives its distinctive character from an additional seven months’ maturation in a coffee liqueur cask. This unusual finish complements the Fijian rum with distinctive notes of coffee, cocoa and roasted flavours, without overshadowing its tropical origins. The producer classifies this release as part of the Single Casks Premium 2024 Collection. At 45.4 per cent, the rum is available in a 0.7-litre bottle and is aimed particularly at connoisseurs of experimental cask maturations and limited-edition Planteray Single Cask rums. The combination of the 2019 vintage, four years’ maturation in bourbon casks, Ferrand casks and a coffee liqueur cask finish makes this edition an unusual interpretation of a matured Fijian rum.

Tasting Note

Colour: Gold.

Nose: Intense and complex, with notes of coffee, caramel, vanilla and hazelnut, followed by pear, lemongrass, floral notes, apple and gooseberry, as well as nutmeg and a subtle hint of smoke.

Palate: Harmonious and full-bodied with vanilla fudge, honey, ginger and mocha, complemented by plum, coconut, almond and cinnamon, as well as herbaceous and earthy notes.

Finish: Long-lasting and delicately bittersweet with dark chocolate and dried banana, accompanied by notes of bourbon, nutmeg and creamy hints of coconut milk.

The Planteray Rum FIJI 2019 Coffee Liqueur Cask Finish is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, allowing the unusual combination of Fijian rum and coffee liqueur cask to unfold fully. A few drops of still water can, if desired, bring out additional fruity and roasted aromas. In terms of food pairing, dark chocolate, tiramisu, coffee-based desserts, roasted nuts or desserts featuring banana and coconut complement the flavour profile particularly well. Thanks to the coffee liqueur cask finish and its single-cask character, this bottling is also ideal for rum tastings and makes a special choice for collectors of experimental Planteray editions.
