The Uncharted Whisky Co Speys Oddity 12 Years Old is an exceptional Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, blended as a small batch from just two casks by the independent bottler The Uncharted Whisky Co. The Speyside distillery from which it originates is deliberately not named. The whisky was distilled in March 2013 and bottled in August 2025 after a total of 12 years’ maturation. Its uniqueness lies in two unusual finishes: part of the whisky spent two years in a Moscatel cask, whilst the other part was finished for two years in a mezcal cask. The contents of both casks were then blended together. This combination of a sweet, fruity dessert wine cask and an earthy, smoky mezcal cask gives the Speys Oddity its distinctive character.

The 12-year-old Speys Oddity is bottled under cask reference UC051 with a robust 54% alcohol content. The Moscatel component primarily contributes lush dried fruit and a velvety texture, whilst the mezcal cask finish adds drier, earthy notes and a subtle smoky accent. The whisky is not chill-filtered and is bottled without colouring. Behind Uncharted Whisky Co. are the independent bottlers Jack Breslin and Dana de Vos, whose focus is on unusual single-cask and small-batch releases. It is precisely the combination of 12 years’ maturation, a Moscatel and Mezcal finish, the use of just two casks and an ABV of 54% that makes Speys Oddity an unusual interpretation of a classic Speyside single malt.

Tasting Note

Colour: Gold to amber.

Nose: Juicy melon, ripe peach and fresh pear, accompanied by rose petals and a subtle hint of mezcal smoke.

Palate: Honey, dried figs and warm spices, complemented by cloves and an earthy, dry mezcal cask character.

Finish: Long-lasting and opulent, with gentle smoke, lingering sweetness and a delicately tart orange peel note.

Due to its robust 54 per cent ABV, the Uncharted Speys Oddity 12 Years Old is best enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C, although a few drops of still water can bring out further fruity and spicy notes. It pairs well with mature hard cheeses, dried figs, roasted nuts or dark chocolate, which particularly complement the Moscatel influence. The subtle mezcal smoke also harmonises with grilled meat or lightly smoked dishes. This bottling is particularly interesting for whisky tastings that focus on unusual cask finishes and independent Speyside bottlings.
