The Hearach Isle of Harris Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the Isle of Harris Distillery’s first single malt and, at the same time, a significant whisky from the Scottish island of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. The distillery was founded in Tarbert with the aim of creating a whisky that is closely linked to its island home. The Hearach is made using 100 per cent Scottish barley, whilst the water comes from the local Abhainn Cnoc a’ Charrain spring. The single malt is produced with a subtle level of peating of around 12 to 15 ppm, meaning that smoke is deliberately used as a complementary element rather than a dominant characteristic. Maturation takes place in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso and Fino sherry casks.

The individual cask components for The Hearach Single Malt are carefully blended together and then left to rest for several more weeks before bottling, allowing a harmonious overall profile to develop. Maturation takes place on Harris, underlining the distillery’s commitment to fully linking its whisky with the island. The Hearach is bottled at 46% ABV, with no chill filtration or artificial colourings used. The bottle, too, has strong links to Harris: the design draws inspiration from, amongst other things, the island’s landscape and artisanal traditions. In this way, the Isle of Harris The Hearach Single Malt Scotch Whisky combines local production, light peating and a complex maturation in bourbon and sherry casks to create a distinctive Hebrides bottling.

Tasting Note

Colour: Gold with warm amber highlights.

Nose: Fruity and malty with vanilla, ripe fruit, subtle spice and a delicate maritime smokiness.

Palate: Balanced and complex with sweet malt, fruit, vanilla and spices, accompanied by gentle peaty smoke and subtle oak notes.

Finish: Long-lasting and harmonious with warm spice, fruit, oak and a subtle lingering smokiness.

The Hearach Isle of Harris Single Malt is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, although a few drops of still water can bring out further facets of its flavour. It pairs well with smoked salmon, mature hard cheese, roasted nuts or dark chocolate, without overpowering its slightly peaty character. The Hearach is also particularly interesting for whisky tastings where island whiskies or lightly peated single malts are compared with one another.
