The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 embodies Penfolds’ signature winemaking style, blending two of Australia’s most iconic red grape varieties into a classic Shiraz-Cabernet cuvée. The grapes are sourced from selected vineyards in South Australia. Within this traditional Australian blend, Shiraz takes on the role of the full-bodied, fruit-forward partner, whilst Cabernet Sauvignon, with its fine-grained tannins, provides structure and definition. The wine is aged in previously used French and American oak, which complements the fruit structure without overshadowing it. With an alcohol content of 14.5 per cent, the 2024 vintage is bottled in 0.75-litre bottles.

The climatic conditions of the 2024 vintage also contributed to the development of the grapes. Winter rainfall was close to the long-term average, whilst July proved unusually dry. A predominantly warm spring, with favourable conditions for budbreak and flowering, was followed by a mild summer without any prolonged heatwaves. Rainfall during the summer was around 20 per cent above the long-term average. These favourable conditions enabled an excellent harvest, during which both Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon were able to develop their typical varietal characteristics. The Penfolds Koonunga Hill 2024 thus combines its South Australian origins, the classic Australian blend and a balanced use of oak to create a red wine full of character.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 displays a deep, dark red colour. On the nose, there are spicy notes of Hungarian paprika and celery salt, accompanied by sandalwood and savoury nuances. On the palate, complex notes of hazelnut chocolate, fried pancetta and salted nori unfold, with a delicate acidity and powdery, fine-grained tannins providing balance. The finish is well-balanced and spicy, whilst the mouthfeel remains supple, dense and smooth.

The Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly well-suited to hearty meat dishes such as grilled beef, steak, lamb or slow-braised beef. This structured Shiraz-Cabernet blend also makes a perfect accompaniment to BBQ dishes, spicy meat stews and hearty dishes with roasted flavours. Mature hard cheese or a hearty snack also complement this Australian red wine well. For a balanced tasting experience, a slightly cool serving temperature of around 16–18 °C is recommended.
