The Habitation Velier Papa Rouyo Guadeloupe Pure Single Rum 2022 56.7% is an exceptional pure single rum from Guadeloupe, produced entirely from fresh sugarcane juice. It was produced at Papa Rouyo in Goyave, a distillery that carries on the legacy of the sugarcane planter Charles Albert Ruscade, known as Papa Rouyo. The sugarcane varieties Canne Moulle and Canne Rouge are used for this bottling. The juice extracted from them was distilled discontinuously in 2022 in the two copper pot stills, ‘Agathe & Danielle’. Particularly noteworthy is the high ester content of 430.1 g/hlpa, which underlines the distillate’s intense aromatics and distinctive character.

The rum was then matured for one year under tropical conditions in Guadeloupe in ex-Cognac casks and French oak, and was bottled by Habitation Velier in 2023. Even during this short tropical maturation period, the Angel’s Share was over 8 per cent. It is bottled at a robust 56.7 per cent cask strength, with no colouring, no added sugar and unfiltered at cold temperatures, thereby preserving the original character of the sugar cane, pot-still distillation and cask maturation. The Papa Rouyo 2022/2023 Habitation Velier thus combines traditional sugarcane processing, intensive tropical maturation and transparent production details to create a particularly characterful Guadeloupe Pure Single Rum, presented in a 0.7-litre bottle with a gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm gold.

Nose: Intense and complex, with honeysuckle, candied ginger and nutmeg, accompanied by cane sugar and subtle notes of French oak.

Palate: Powerful yet creamy, with vanilla, candied citrus fruits and pineapple, complemented by papaya, nectarine and the fresh character of sugarcane juice.

Finish: Long-lasting and silky, with ginger, peach skin and toffee, accompanied by a subtle hint of cane sugar and fresh sugarcane aromas.

The Habitation Velier Papa Rouyo 2022/2023 is best enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C to fully appreciate its intense pot-still and sugarcane character. At 56.7% cask strength, a few drops of still water can open up the robust structure and bring out additional fruity and spicy nuances. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts and desserts featuring pineapple, papaya, peach or candied citrus fruits make ideal accompaniments. This bottling is particularly interesting for comparative tastings of pure single rums made from fresh sugarcane juice, as the combination of pot-still distillation and Cognac cask maturation results in a distinctive style.
