The Habitation Velier PROVIDENCE Haiti Pure Single Rum 2020 55% comes from the Distillerie de Port-au-Prince in Haiti and was distilled in 2020. The distillery was established through a collaboration between the Barbancourt-Linge family and La Maison & Velier, and combines traditional Haitian rum-making with a transparent, artisanal approach to production. The base is a syrup made from Haitian sugar cane, which is processed and fermented on site. Distillation takes place discontinuously in a Müller-manufactured still with water-bath heating, which enables a particularly controlled distillation process. The Providence is thus produced entirely within a single distillery as a pure single rum and represents a distinct style within Haiti’s diverse rum tradition.

Following distillation, the Providence 2020 was aged for a total of four years in the tropical climate of Haiti and was bottled in 2024. Ex-Caroni rum casks were used for the ageing process; the fact that these casks previously held distillates from the now-closed Caroni Distillery in Trinidad lends this edition an additional historical distinction. The rum is presented with a robust 55% alcohol content, thereby retaining an intense structure. Habitation Velier is renowned for bottlings that place particular emphasis on the distillery, distillation method and origin. The Providence 2020/2024 4 Years Old thus combines Haitian pure single rum, four years of tropical maturation and ex-Caroni casks to create a characterful 0.7-litre bottling presented in a gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm amber with golden highlights.

Nose: Intense and complex, with tropical fruits, ripe banana and candied citrus, accompanied by vanilla, spices and subtle oak notes.

Palate: Powerful and well-structured with ripe tropical fruit, caramel and vanilla, complemented by spicy notes, sugar cane and a distinctive oak character.

Finish: Long-lasting and warming, with tropical fruits, spices, vanilla and dry, lingering oak notes.

The Habitation Velier Providence 2020/2024 is best enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C to fully appreciate its robust distillate and cask character. At 55%, a few drops of still water may be added, which can bring out additional fruity and spicy nuances. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts and strong hard cheese pair well with its intense structure, whilst desserts featuring banana, pineapple, caramel or vanilla complement its tropical, sweet notes. This bottling is particularly well-suited to comparative tastings of different Providence vintages and ex-Caroni cask maturations.
