Planteray Rum JAMAICA VRW 2017 Kentucky Bourbon Cask Finish 51.8% vol. 0.7 l is a limited-edition single-cask bottling from Jamaica, which forms part of the Planteray Single Cask Collection 2024. This Jamaican rum is produced from sugar cane molasses at the historic Long Pond Distillery, where the molasses is fermented for a week and then distilled using the traditional pot still method. The designation VRW (Vale Royal Wedderburn) stands for a distinctive Jamaican rum style with a pronounced ester profile. Distilled in 2017, the rum is first matured for six months in tropical conditions in bourbon casks, before spending a further five years and ten months in Ferrand casks in France. The process is rounded off with an eight-month finish in Kentucky bourbon casks. Bottled at 51.8% ABV in a 0.7-litre bottle with a gift box, this special edition combines traditional Jamaican rum-making with exceptional cask maturation.

The Planteray Rum brand, formerly Plantation Rum, belongs to the French spirits house Maison Ferrand and is led by Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel. Planteray Jamaica VRW 2017 is characterised by its three-stage maturation and the distinctive distillate from the Long Pond Distillery. The final Kentucky bourbon cask finish complements the rum’s intense character with additional notes of American oak. With an ester content of 191 g/hl of pure alcohol, a dosage of 0 g of sugar per litre and a total maturation period of seven years, this bottling ranks among the most exceptional rarities in the Planteray Single Cask series. The combination of Jamaican pot-still rum and further maturation in a Kentucky bourbon cask makes it an interesting choice for rum connoisseurs and collectors.

Tasting Note

Colour: Golden yellow with warm amber highlights.

Nose: Ripe banana, cantaloupe melon, pineapple, fresh lime zest, vanilla, nutmeg and delicate caramel.

Palate: Expressive and multi-layered, with tropical pineapple, citrus fruits, star fruit, apple and cherries, complemented by allspice, cinnamon and subtle tobacco notes.

Finish: Long-lasting and complex, with fresh citrus notes, subtle smoky undertones, vanilla cream, coffee, almonds and a hint of pepper.

The Planteray Jamaica VRW 2017 Kentucky Bourbon Cask Finish is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, ideally in a tulip-shaped nosing glass. A few drops of still water can further enhance the intense fruit and spice notes. As a culinary accompaniment, grilled pineapple, caramelised bananas or dark chocolate harmonise beautifully with the tropical flavours and bourbon cask characteristics. Matured Cheddar, roasted almonds or spicy BBQ specialities also offer an interesting complement.
