Ardbeg Corryvreckan is an intense and powerful Islay single malt whisky with an impressive alcohol content of 57.1% ABV. Named after the infamous Corryvreckan maelstrom, located north of Islay between the islands of Jura and Scarba, this whisky embodies the wild and untamed nature of the Scottish islands. Its deep flavours, coupled with extreme smokiness, make it one of Ardbeg’s most impressive whiskies.

The distillery’s history stretches back a long way: whisky has been distilled here unofficially since 1794, before John McDougall officially founded Ardbeg in 1815. The name ‘Ardbeg’ means ‘little hill’ in Gaelic and refers to the distillery’s geographical location on the rugged south coast of Islay, which is renowned for its heavily peated whiskies with a maritime character.

The Corryvreckan is matured in a combination of French oak casks and ex-bourbon casks, which lends it exceptional spice and complexity. It was originally developed for the Ardbeg Committee members and is now an integral part of the core range. With its explosive intensity and deep aromas, it is a true powerhouse amongst Islay whiskies and is aimed primarily at lovers of heavily peated and high-proof single malts.

Tasting Note

Colour: Deep gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Powerful peaty smoke with dark chocolate, leather, black pepper and maritime notes.

Palate: Full-bodied and oily with intense smokiness, blackcurrant, espresso and robust spices.

Finish: Extremely long, smoky and spicy with notes of tar, leather and toasted almonds. A warm, maritime aftertaste.

Thanks to its robust and smoky character, it pairs superbly with grilled meat, smoky BBQ dishes or spicy blue cheese. Dark chocolate with sea salt or salted caramel desserts also harmonise perfectly with its intense flavours.
