The Weingut Umathum is situated in Burgenland on the shores of Lake Neusiedl. As well as authentic red wines, the winery also produces exciting white wines. However, over 85 per cent of the vineyard’s 33 hectares is reserved for red wine production. Some of the most important and well-known vineyard sites are Haideboden, Vom Stein, Kirschgarten and Ried Hallebühl. All these sites are situated around Lake Neusiedl. The single-vineyard wines only leave the winery after a three-year Lager period, at which point they are made available for sale.

Haideboden, originally spelled with an ‘A’, encompasses the area around the pilgrimage site of Frauenkirchen. The name Haideboden was first used for this wine in 1991. The grapes for the cuvée come from vineyards west of Frauenkirchen and consist of the Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Franc varieties.

The grapes for the Umathum Haideboden Cuvée thrive on quartz-rich gravelly soil, which gives the wine its characteristic minerality. Following gentle fermentation, the wine is aged unfiltered in small oak barrels for two winters to allow its complex aromas to develop. It is bottled and sealed with a natural cork, which preserves the authentic flavour and allows the wine to be cellared for up to 20 years.

Tasting Note

An intense garnet red in the glass. The nose and palate reveal the same nuances of ripe cherries and redcurrants. Long-lasting, full-bodied and with a slightly smoky finish.

Serving temperature: 17–20 °C

Pairs excellently with pasta dishes, game, lamb and mature cheeses.
