Making of: Gorbachev at the limits of what is possible

First, the vodka is cooled in the heat exchanger (1st filtration). After this initial filtration, it is heated and then cooled down to -12 °C (2nd filtration). It is at these freezing sub-zero temperatures that the unwanted compounds can be most effectively filtered out of the vodka to achieve a pleasant, mild flavour. Lower temperatures are not possible in this process, so it is fair to say: the Macher of Gorbatschow Wodka go to the limits of what is possible for the enjoyment of connoisseurs!

It takes patience and precision

Further on in the filtration process, extremely effective activated carbon filters are used (3rd filtration). Just one gram of activated carbon has an effect in the filtration process equivalent to the size of a football pitch. The Macher of Gorbachev top it all off by prolonging the filtration using activated carbon filters: It is at this stage of the filtration process, under freezing temperatures and over a particularly long period, that the activated carbon filters work to their full potential. After being reheated in the heat exchanger, the vodka undergoes a further filtration through fine filters, which, according to the manufacturer, give it its ‘pure soul’ (4th filtration). Using state-of-the-art filtration technologies, exceptionally low temperatures and as part of a remarkably elaborate filtration process, Gorbachev is ultimately produced just as vodka connoisseurs love it: velvety smooth, mild and crystal-clear.

However, this Russian vodka actually originated in St Petersburg: Leontovich Gorbachev had been producing the vodka there for several years before fleeing to Berlin with his family during the October Revolution. In Berlin, Leontowitsch Gorbatschow finally received permission to open a distillery in 1921 – from then on, the famous Gorbatschow Wodka was produced in Berlin. Until the 1950s, Gorbatschow was largely unknown beyond the borders of Berlin. However, this changed when the company changed hands in the 1950s: Arthur Barth oversaw a major expansion, with the result that Gorbatschow was already among the market leaders in Germany just a few years later. Today, Gorbatschow Wodka is known, among other things, for its slogan ‘The pure soul of vodka’.
