As one of the best-known craft mezcals in the US, Ilegal Mezcal has won numerous awards – for its quality, transparency and iconic branding. Although backed by Bacardi, the brand retains its independent character.

A slim bottle, a green wax cap, a hand-labelled label – Ilegal opts for understated design with high brand recognition. The minimalist design reflects the brand’s artisanal authenticity and ethos.

Espadín agaves take up to ten years to mature; they are roasted in brick-lined pits, ground using a traditional tahona, and then fermented in open pine vats. The spirit is double-distilled in small copper stills – resulting in an authentic, intense aroma.

Ilegal works with locally grown agave, using traditional methods and adhering to a clear commitment to sustainability: no additives, renewable energy, and a social commitment to the community in Oaxaca.

Produced in Tlacolula, Oaxaca, Ilegal Mezcal follows the traditions of four generations of mezcaleros. The agave is harvested sustainably, roasted in an earth oven and fermented in open wooden barrels – resulting in an earthy, smoky profile and a delicate balance.

• Ilegal Joven: Crisp, fresh and slightly smoky – perfect on its own or as a base for cocktails.
• Ilegal Reposado: Aged for 2 to 6 months in American oak – with notes of vanilla, caramel and spices.
• Ilegal Añejo: Aged for 13 months – deep, complex and smooth with hints of chocolate, tobacco and wood.
