A characteristic feature of many Lowland whiskies is triple distillation, which makes the spirit particularly pure, smooth and elegant. Compared to other regions , whiskies from this area are often unpeated, resulting in floral, grassy and fruity aromas. The combination of a smooth texture, delicate sweetness and subtle complexity makes these whiskies unique.

Lowland whiskies offer aromas of fresh grass, citrus fruits, white flowers, honey and delicate vanilla. Maturation in bourbon and sherry casks adds further depth: bourbon casks emphasise vanilla and oak, whilst sherry casks contribute dried fruit and spice. This variety of casks gives Lowland whiskies a pleasantly complex layered aroma.

The Lowlands are home to major grain distilleries, such as Cameronbridge and Girvan. These produce the majority of Scottish grain whisky used in blends. Their role is essential to the overall structure of the whisky industry – both economically and in terms of volume.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Lowlands were a hub of whisky production. Many distilleries were lost as a result of industrialisation and the shift towards grain whisky. Today, the Lowlands are experiencing a renaissance – with new distilleries, modern craftsmanship and a growing interest in smooth, elegant single malts.

The Lowlands offer ideal conditions for growing barley and cereals. The proximity to water sources, fertile soil and logistical infrastructure makes the region ideal for whisky production – both for single malts and grain whisky.

Since 2010, the region has seen significant growth: numerous new distilleries are adding to its diversity, including Lindores Abbey, Daftmill and Borders Distillery. They combine traditional craftsmanship with innovative approaches and are breathing new life into the Lowlands as a whisky-producing region.
