The Douglas Laing Scallywag Speyside Blended Malt is a blended malt Scotch whisky composed exclusively of selected Speyside single malt whiskies. For this blend, which is bottled in small batches, the independent Scottish bottler Douglas Laing uses malts from Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes, amongst others. The whiskies used are predominantly matured in Spanish sherry casks, the influence of which significantly shapes Scallywag’s characteristically rich and fruity style. The name and the distinctive label are inspired by the Douglas Laing family’s fox terriers and give the bottling a high level of recognisability within the Remarkable Regional Malts range.


The Scallywag Speyside Blended Malt forms part of Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts series and represents the characteristic whisky style of Speyside within it. It is bottled at 46% in a 0.7-litre bottle, complete with a gift box, and deliberately without chill filtration or the addition of colouring. Its rich, dark colour comes exclusively from cask maturation, particularly from the Spanish sherry butts used. Furthermore, the blending and bottling take place in small batches, which gives Scallywag its special status within the Douglas Laing range. Tasting Note

Colour: Rich, dark gold to amber, resulting solely from cask maturation.

Nose: Rich and spicy with pronounced vanilla, accompanied by sweet and warm sherry cask aromas.

Palate: Full-bodied and complex, with sweet stewed fruit and dark chocolate, complemented by nutmeg, cinnamon and subtle hints of vanilla.

Finish: Long-lasting and fruity-spicy with zesty orange, fresh ginger, cocoa and rich fruit cake.

The Douglas Laing Scallywag Speyside Blended Malt is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, although a few drops of water can further open up the intense sherry, fruit and spice notes. It pairs particularly well with dark chocolate, fruit cake, roasted nuts or mature hard cheese. Its character also comes into its own as a digestif or as part of a tasting of various Speyside whiskies and sherry cask malts.
