Description
The Grande Absente is a premium French absinthe characterised by its high alcohol content, authentic herbal blend and traditional production methods. With a full 69% ABV in its generous 1-litre bottle, this bottling is aimed at connoisseurs who appreciate the classic absinthe style in its powerful and aromatically rich form. It is produced in Provence – the historic heartland of absinthe – according to a recipe modelled on the originals from the late 19th century.
The recipe is based on a variety of traditional botanicals, including wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), aniseed, fennel and other aromatic herbs. These are macerated using the traditional method and then distilled to finely balance the complex aroma. A distinctive feature is the distinctly bitter wormwood note, combined with a spicy, slightly sweet aniseed note. The high alcohol content is typical of authentic absinthes and ensures that the flavours unfold with particular intensity – especially when prepared in the traditional way with water.
Grande Absente is inspired by the so-called ‘Grüne Fee’, as absinthe was known in the days of artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh. Today, it is enjoying a stylish comeback as a classic ritual drink, a creative cocktail ingredient or a collector’s item.
Tasting Note
Colour: Brilliant emerald green.
Nose: An intense aroma of aniseed, fennel and wormwood with delicate herbal notes and a subtle sweetness.
Palate: Complex and full-bodied, with dominant aniseed and fennel flavours, accompanied by a slight bitterness from the wormwood. Notes of lemon balm and mint lend a touch of freshness.
Finish: Long, spicy and slightly bitter with lingering herbal and liquorice notes.
Grande Absente is traditionally enjoyed according to the classic absinthe ceremony: To do this, pour a small amount of absinthe into a glass, place a perforated spoon with a sugar cube on top, and slowly drip ice-cold water over it until the absinthe takes on a milky-cloudy, opalescent colour – this effect is known as the ‘louche’ effect.
It is also excellent in cocktails such as the ‘Death in the Afternoon’ (with champagne) or the classic Sazerac, where it serves as an aromatic base. Culinary pairings include dark chocolate, tangy cheese or Mediterranean tapas, which perfectly complement its herbaceous flavours. An intense experience for connoisseurs who appreciate the authentic taste of genuine absinthe.
