Matthew Gloag, the grandson of the founder and the man after whom the brand is named, took over the family business in 1896, almost a century after it was founded in 1800.

Just one year later, he created a new whisky blend, which he named ‘The Grouse Brand’, in the expectation that many hunters would stop off in Perth during the hunting season. His daughter designed the accompanying label, which features Scotland’s national bird, the grouse. The whisky enjoyed immediate popularity and sold so well that, after just a few years, the name was changed to ‘The Famous Grouse’, omitting the word ‘Brand’.

This whisky is the successor to the well-known ‘The Black Grouse’ and is characterised by a higher proportion of peated malts, including a rare bottling from The Glenturret. These carefully selected, peaty malts give ‘Smoky Black’ its characteristic smoky yet smooth flavour. The profile is complemented by exceptional grain whiskies, which harmoniously round off the flavour and lend the whisky its distinctive depth and complexity.

Tasting Note

Colour: Deep gold.

Nose: Aromas of peated smoke and liquorice, accompanied by subtle notes of citrus and spices.

Palate: Full-bodied and smoky with hints of dark chocolate, oak and a touch of dried fruit.

Finish: Medium-length and smoky, with a pleasant aftertaste of sweet vanilla and a hint of pepper.

The Famous Grouse SMOKY BLACK is excellent when paired with hearty dishes such as grilled meat or a spicy barbecue. Its intense smoky flavour harmonises particularly well with the aroma of smoked cheese or a rustic pot roast. For an unusual dessert pairing, try it with a rich chocolate cake or chocolate mousse, as the bitter notes of the chocolate lend a lovely depth to the whisky’s smoky tones.
