The Kavalan SOLIST Oloroso Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky is a particularly intense single cask bottling from Taiwan, which highlights the influence of a selected Oloroso sherry cask. The Kavalan Whisky is produced by the Kavalan Distillery in Yilan, where the subtropical climate ensures a particularly intense interaction between the distillate and the oak cask. For the SOLIST Oloroso Sherry Cask range, selected whiskies are matured entirely in Oloroso sherry casks and then bottled individually. Unlike a sherry finish, this is therefore not merely a short period of secondary maturation. Each bottling comes from a single cask, which means that the alcohol content, cask number and number of bottles may vary between the different SOLIST bottlings.

This variant is bottled at a robust 59.4% in cask strength, thus combining the characteristics of a single cask with cask strength. Kavalan does not use a standardised drinking strength for the SOLIST series, ensuring that the individual character of each Oloroso sherry cask is preserved. Furthermore, the whisky is not chill-filtered and is presented in its natural colour. The combination of tropical maturation in Taiwan, a selected Oloroso sherry cask and unadulterated cask strength is one of the defining characteristics of this internationally renowned Kavalan range. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a high-quality gift box and is aimed particularly at connoisseurs of intense sherry cask whiskies and distinctive single cask bottlings.

Tasting Note

Colour: Dark mahogany with deep reddish-brown highlights.

Nose: Intense notes of dried fruit, raisins and dark cherries, accompanied by nuts, spices, vanilla and pronounced Oloroso sherry aromas.

Palate: Powerful, full-bodied and complex, with dried fruit, dark chocolate and nuts, complemented by caramel, spicy oak and a rich sherry character.

Finish: Very long-lasting and warming, with dark fruits, nuts, chocolate and robust oaky spice.

The Kavalan SOLIST Oloroso Sherry Cask 59.4% is best enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C to begin with; a few drops of still water can then be added to adjust the high cask strength to your personal preference. It pairs well with dark chocolate, walnuts, dried figs, dates or strong, matured hard cheese. Desserts featuring cherries, raisins or dark chocolate also complement the intense sherry cask character well. Owing to the combination of single cask and cask strength, this bottling is particularly well-suited to discerning whisky tastings and collections.
