Balvenie 14 Years Old The WEEK OF PEAT is an exceptional Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, bottled at 48.3 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle, complete with a gift box. This special bottling originated from an experimental project at Balvenie Distillery, when the then Distillery Manager, Ian Millar, used a week when production was at a standstill to reconnect with the historical roots of whisky-making. Inspired by a visit to Islay, he had Speyside peat sourced and an additional peat burner fitted to the darry oven. This gave rise to the eponymous ‘Week of Peat’, during which peated barley was malted using traditional methods – much as was once common on many Scottish farms.


The whisky is then matured for 14 years, combining Balvenie’s characteristic honey-sweet, fruity character with an elegantly integrated smoky profile. Heavily peated smoke is used in the production process, with phenol levels reaching around 30 ppm during the experimental phase – comparable to some well-known Islay whiskies. The experiments were largely overseen by long-standing Malt Master David C. Stewart, who drew inspiration from the historic, peated Balvenie bottlings of the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s. The result is a harmonious Speyside single malt that combines sweet fruit aromas, vanilla and honey with delicate peat smoke and spicy oak.

Tasting Note

Colour: Gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Honey, vanilla, citrus fruits, heather, sweet malt and elegant peated smoke.

Palate: Smooth and complex, with honey, candied fruit, vanilla, oaky notes, malt and harmoniously integrated smoke.

Finish: Long-lasting with gentle peaty smoke, sweet vanilla, spices and subtle woody notes.

Balvenie 14 Years Old The WEEK OF PEAT reveals its flavours best when enjoyed neat or with a few drops of still water. It pairs superbly with smoked salmon, BBQ ribs, rack of lamb, game dishes, mature Cheddar, Comté, blue cheese, dark chocolate, roasted hazelnuts or crème brûlée. This peated Speyside single malt also pairs superbly with grilled mushrooms or a steak cooked on a charcoal grill, as the subtle smoky notes and sweet malty flavours harmonise perfectly with the roasted flavours of the food.
