The Ilegal Mezcal Joven Special Edition 40% vol. 0.7 l is a mezcal from Oaxaca with a distinctive character, which impressively reflects the artisanal tradition of Mexican agave distillation. As the latest addition to the Ilegal Mezcal range, this Mezcal Joven embodies authenticity, traditional production methods and the unmistakable character of high-quality agave distillates from Mexico. It is made from carefully harvested agave, prepared using traditional methods. The agave hearts are slowly cooked over a wood fire fuelled by eucalyptus wood, which develops the typical style of a traditional Oaxaca mezcal. This is followed by double distillation under the supervision of Master Distiller Señor Hernandez, before the mezcal is bottled following a short resting period in steel tanks.


The story behind Ilegal Mezcal is closely linked to its name. In the early 2000s, co-founder John Rexer ran the well-known ‘Cafe No Se’ in Antigua, Guatemala. The café’s regulars – often musicians, writers and creative types – developed a great enthusiasm for handcrafted mezcal from Oaxaca. As the legal framework at the time severely restricted exports to Guatemala, the coveted agave distillate was smuggled across the border in barrels. Over time, this developed into a cult brand within the international bar scene. Since Bacardi’s acquisition in 2017, new international markets have opened up for Ilegal Mezcal, whilst the focus remains on traditional production and authentic Mexican mezcal craftsmanship.

Nose: Deep agave notes, citrus freshness, green apples, pepper.

Palate: Powerful, agave spice, citrus notes, menthol, peppercorns, sweet vanilla.

Finish: Medium-length, eucalyptus, gentle smoky notes.

Ilegal Mezcal Joven is ideal for classic mezcal cocktails such as a mezcal margarita or a mezcal paloma, in which its characteristic agave base really comes into its own. This traditional mezcal from Oaxaca also reveals its aromatic profile in modern cocktail creations featuring fresh citrus fruits, grapefruit or lime. In the kitchen, it pairs well with Mexican dishes such as tacos with grilled meat, spicy salsas or roasted vegetables. It also pairs well with smoked dishes, grilled fish or hearty BBQ dishes, where the mezcal can be used both as an accompaniment and as an aromatic ingredient in marinades or sauces.
