The Macallan 15 Years Old Double Cask is a 15-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, in which the combination of two types of oak forms the central element of the maturation process. For The Macallan Double Cask Collection, sherry-seasoned casks made from American and European oak are used; these are crafted in close collaboration with coopers and bodegas in Jerez de la Frontera and pre-seasoned with sherry. The American oak primarily contributes creamy vanilla and a softer sweetness, whilst the European oak brings more pronounced notes of spice, dried fruit and wood. Over a maturation period of at least 15 years, these diverse influences develop into a balanced and multi-layered single malt.

Cask selection and the long-standing collaboration with coopers and sherry producers in Jerez are among the defining elements of The Macallan Distillery. In the Macallan Double Cask 15 Years Old, this expertise in cask selection is combined with a completely natural colour and an alcohol content of 43 per cent. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a gift box, making it an ideal high-quality present. Launched in 2016, the Double Cask Collection complements The Macallan’s Sherry Oak and Colour Collections and deliberately highlights the balance between American and European oak. The current design by David Carson also draws on the art of coopering: the cask, the silhouette of the bottle and the superimposed typographical elements visually interpret the precision of craftsmanship and the complex interplay between the two types of cask.

Tasting Note

Colour: Natural gold with warm amber highlights.

Nose: Dried fruit and butterscotch blend with baked apple, chocolate, creamy vanilla and soft oak notes.

Palate: Full-bodied and well-balanced with sweet raisins and sultanas, creamy vanilla, and spicy cinnamon and nutmeg, harmoniously complemented by subtle oak.

Finish: Medium-long to long-lasting, with oak, warming spices and a subtle, creamy sweetness.

The Macallan 15 Years Old Double Cask, presented in a gift box, is particularly recommended for enjoying neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can reveal additional nuances. It pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted almonds and walnuts, as well as mature hard cheeses. Desserts featuring baked apple, raisins, caramel or cinnamon complement the whisky’s fruity and spicy notes particularly well.
