The Amahagan World Malt Whisky Edition No. 2 RED WINE WOOD Finish is a characterful world blended malt whisky, bottled at 47 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle, complete with a gift box. As the second edition in the Amahagan series, it combines selected malt whiskies from various countries with new make spirit from the Japanese Nagahama Distillery. This small distillery is situated near Mount Ibuki and Lake Biwa, and uses particularly compact stills for distillation. A distinctive feature is the so-called Aranbic Pot Stills, whose name derives from their shape, which is reminiscent of traditional Arabic stills. The Nagahama new make contributes a particularly pronounced malty character to the blend.


The defining feature of the Amahagan Edition No. 2 is the Red Wine Wood Finish. After blending, the whisky undergoes further maturation in red wine casks, the influence of which enriches the malty base with notes of dark fruit, tannins and spicy elements. Maturation under Japan’s climatic conditions, with significant temperature fluctuations, also influences the interaction between the distillate and the wood. The combination of international malt whiskies, Nagahama New Make and the red wine finish results in a unique interpretation of a ‘World Malt’. With a robust 47% ABV, this edition is aimed particularly at whisky enthusiasts seeking fruity and experimental cask finishes.

Tasting Note

Colour: Dark gold to amber with reddish highlights.

Nose: Intense and memorable, with malty sweetness, raisins, red berries and other ripe dried fruits.

Palate: Smooth and intense with pronounced sweetness, ripe fruit and an increasingly tannic, pleasantly astringent structure.

Finish: Medium-length and gentle, with subtle notes of cinnamon and black pepper, and lingering hints of fruit and spice.

The Amahagan Edition No. 2 Red Wine Wood Finish is particularly enjoyable neat at room temperature or with a few drops of still water. It pairs well with savoury dishes such as duck breast, braised beef, game or mature hard cheese, as their robust flavours harmonise well with the red wine and tannin notes. Suitable sweet accompaniments include dark chocolate, berry desserts or pastries with raisins and cinnamon. This makes the World Malt particularly well-suited as a digestif after a hearty meal or for whisky tastings focusing on different cask finishes.
