The GlenAllachie 16 Years Old 50th Anniversary Past Edition is a strictly limited special release from the independent GlenAllachie Distillery and marks the start of the three-part Billy Walker 50th Anniversary Trilogy. The series was created to mark the 50th anniversary of Master Distiller Billy Walker’s career in the whisky industry, which began in 1972. The three editions are dedicated to key aspects of his work: sherry cask maturation, cask management and distillation. For the Past Edition, bottled in February 2022, selected casks were drawn from the Speyside distillery’s extensive stock.

This 16-year-old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky was matured in sherry butts and bottled at a robust 57.1% ABV. As is customary with GlenAllachie, it was bottled without chill filtration or added colouring, thus preserving the whisky’s natural character. Only 4,000 bottles of the GlenAllachie 50th Anniversary Past Edition were released worldwide, making this bottling particularly appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of limited-edition GlenAllachie whiskies. The combination of 16 years’ maturation, sherry cask influence, high ABV and historical significance within the anniversary trilogy underlines the special status of this 0.7-litre bottling with its gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: Brilliant amber with warm highlights.

Nose: Walnuts, heather honey and subtle notes of dried fruit, accompanied by roasted coffee, orange peel and cinnamon.

Palate: Powerful and complex, with fig syrup, toasted pine nuts and heather honey, complemented by candied ginger and dried apricots.

Finish: Long-lasting, intense and warming, with lingering notes of fruit, nuts and spices.

Due to its high ABV, the GlenAllachie 16 Years Old 50th Anniversary Past Edition is best enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can help to further open up the flavours. It pairs well with mature hard cheeses, hearty game dishes or slow-braised beef. Desserts featuring figs, walnuts, dark chocolate or dried fruit also complement the character of the sherry cask maturation. As it is limited to 4,000 bottles, the Past Edition is also particularly well-suited to special occasions and comparative tastings within the 50th Anniversary Trilogy.
