MacNair’s 7 Years Old Peated Exploration Rum Panama combines Panama Rum with the cask expertise of Scotland’s The GlenAllachie Distillery. The base spirit is Panama Rum, distilled from sugarcane molasses, which undergoes its initial maturation in American oak casks in the tropical climate of Central America. After being personally selected by Master Blender Billy Walker, the rum is sent to Scotland to the GlenAllachie Distillery, where the significantly cooler climate provides different conditions for further maturation. After blending, the crucial second phase of maturation begins: the rum spends more than two years in casks that previously held peated single malt whisky from GlenAllachie. In total, this bottling has a maturation period of seven years.


By combining tropical maturation in Panama with secondary cask ageing in Scotland, MacNair’s takes an unusual approach with this Exploration Rum. The former peated single malt casks lend the matured rum an additional smoky dimension, without overshadowing its tropical origins. MacNair’s Peated Exploration Panama Rum is bottled at 46 per cent ABV, with no chill filtration or added colouring. Behind the range is Billy Walker, whose expertise in cask selection, blending and maturation forms an essential part of the MacNair’s concept. The combination of Panama Rum, 7 years’ ageing, peated cask maturation and natural presentation makes this 0.7-litre bottle a unique interpretation of aged rum. It is also supplied in a gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: Sunset gold.

Nose: Ripe plantains, apricots and coconut blend with distinctive cigar smoke.

Palate: Peach, mango and pineapple meet burnt sugar, mocha and fresh orange zest.

Finish: Long-lasting, fruity and warming, with lingering notes of toast, smoke and citrus.

MacNair’s 7 Years Old Peated Exploration Rum is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, although allowing it to rest in the glass for a few minutes enhances the interplay between tropical fruit and smoke. In terms of food pairings, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, grilled pineapple or desserts featuring coffee and orange complement its profile. The smoky character from the cask also makes it an interesting accompaniment to hearty BBQs and smoked dishes. This bottling is particularly recommended for rum and whisky tastings where the influence of ex-peated single malt casks is to be directly appreciated.
