Laphroaig is a whisky distillery on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay and is owned by the Japanese-American Beam Suntory Group. The distillery’s buildings are listed on the Scottish heritage register. In the production of Laphroaig, barley malt is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, which is found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour.

In total, the Ian Hunter Story comprises five editions, which are published annually. Book 4: Malt Master is already the fourth and penultimate instalment in this series. The fourth part is devoted to the malting floors. To this day, the distillery produces its own barley malt there as the basis for its excellent whiskies. The packaging of this Laphroaig not only resembles a book; it can actually be leafed through, and the distillery’s history is told across a total of 15 pages.

This 34-year-old whisky is initially matured in American white oak bourbon casks. The single malt is then finished in European first-fill Oloroso sherry casks before being bottled at 46.2 per cent ABV.

Tasting Note

Colour: Dark gold.

Nose: Sweet notes of golden syrup, caramel biscuit, hints of honey, black pepper, tobacco leaves, eucalyptus.

Palate: Peaty, sweet, notes of peach, orange blossom, earthy and floral hints.

Finish: Long-lasting, woody.
