Lochlea OUR BARLEY Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the first regular core range bottling from the Lochlea Distillery, marking an important milestone in the Scottish distillery’s still-young history. The distillery is situated in Ayrshire in the Scottish Lowlands and takes a consistently farm-focused approach. A specific combination of different cask types was chosen for OUR BARLEY: this Lowland single malt is matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, Oloroso sherry butts and STR barriques. STR stands for ‘Shaved, Toasted and Re-charred’ and refers to wine casks that have been treated in this way. This combination was developed to express Lochlea’s distinctive house style in a release that will be available on a permanent basis.


John Campbell, who previously worked at Laphroaig for many years and collaborated with the Lochlea team on the blend, played a central role in the development of Lochlea OUR BARLEY. The single malt Scotch whisky is bottled at a robust 46 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle, complete with a gift box. The combination of bourbon, sherry and STR casks brings together a variety of influences and enhances the fruity, grain-forward yet spicy character of the expression. This makes OUR BARLEY an excellent introduction to the Lochlea Distillery range, whilst also appealing to whisky lovers seeking a modern single malt from the Scottish Lowlands with a varied cask composition.

Tasting Note

Colour: Pale gold.

Nose: Expressive and fruity with ripe pears, sweet jam and a subtle hint of cinnamon, accompanied by floral and subtle malty notes.

Palate: Fresh and well-balanced with juicy fruit, notes of grain and a rich syrupy sweetness, complemented by vanilla, caramel and a pleasant oaky spice.

Finish: Long-lasting with macadamia nuts, creamy vanilla and orange, rounded off by beeswax and a gentle spiciness.

Lochlea OUR BARLEY Single Malt is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, although a few drops of still water can further bring out the fruity and cereal-driven notes. Culinary pairings include mild to medium-strong hard cheeses, roasted nuts, butter biscuits or desserts featuring pear and vanilla, which complement its balanced character well. OUR BARLEY is also ideal as a whisky for a relaxed tasting session, particularly when compared directly with other Lowland single malts. The gift box also makes the 0.7-litre bottle an ideal present for lovers of Scotch whiskies.
