Four Pillars Spiced Negroni Gin is a robust and particularly spicy gin from Australia, developed in 2014 with a clear aim: to create a gin that could hold its own against the intense flavours of bitters and vermouth, particularly in a Negroni cocktail. The idea arose from discussions between Four Pillars distiller Cameron Mackenzie and the renowned bartender Jason Williams. The recipe features an extensive selection of botanicals, including juniper, coriander, green cardamom, cassia, star anise, lavender, angelica, Tasmanian pepperberry, lemon myrtle, orange and ginger. Added to these are the particularly character-defining spices ‘grains of paradise’ from West Africa and Indonesian cubeb pepper, which provide additional intensity and spice.

During distillation, the focus is specifically on achieving a full-bodied and aromatically concentrated style, ensuring that the Spiced Negroni Gin remains distinctly present even in robust cocktails. Fresh ginger in the botanical basket further highlights the spice components, whilst the special configuration of the still gives the gin greater body and structure. At 43.8% ABV in the 0.7-litre bottle, this bottling is one of the most characterful variants of Four Pillars Gin from Healesville in Australia’s Yarra Valley.

Tasting Note

Colour: Clear.

Nose: Intense and aromatic with juniper, fresh orange and ginger, accompanied by cardamom, cinnamon and exotic pepper notes.

Palate: Powerful and spicy with juniper, citrus fruits and fresh ginger, complemented by grains of paradise, cubeb pepper, Tasmanian pepperberry and warm spicy notes.

Finish: Long-lasting, spicy and intense with juniper, pepper, citrus and warming spices.

Four Pillars Spiced Negroni Gin was developed specifically for a Negroni and is therefore particularly well-suited to the classic combination of gin, red vermouth and bitters in equal parts, served over ice with orange zest. Its robust spices ensure that the gin remains clearly distinguishable even alongside the bitter and sweet components of the cocktail. It is also ideal for a spicy gin and tonic, preferably with a classic, not overly aromatic tonic water. Culinary pairings such as spicy antipasti, mature hard cheeses, olives or roasted nuts complement its intense profile well.
