The Compass Box ULTRAMARINE Extinct Blends Quartet is a strictly limited-edition blended Scotch whisky that reinterprets historic premium blends from past decades. It was inspired by a deluxe blended Scotch first released in the late 1980s, whose characteristic combination of sherry influences, tobacco notes and complex smokiness forms the basis for ULTRAMARINE. This expression is part of the Extinct Blends Quartet, a series in which Compass Box revisits four selected blended Scotch whiskies from days gone by. The aim is not to create an exact replica of historical recipes, but rather a modern reinterpretation of their style. Some of Compass Box’s rarest and most distinctive whisky stocks were used in the composition to combine the character of classic blends with contemporary whisky-making techniques.


Lead Whiskymaker James Saxon is responsible for Compass Box ULTRAMARINE. The fundamental idea behind the Extinct Blends series is that Scotch whisky production methods and styles have evolved over the decades, meaning that historical blends can differ significantly from their modern counterparts. ULTRAMARINE draws in particular on the style of luxurious blends from the late 1980s, combining sherry-influenced notes with oak and complex peaty smoke. The whisky was bottled in August 2022 with a robust 51% alcohol content. It retains its natural colour and has not been chill-filtered. With just 5,430 bottles produced worldwide, this is a strictly limited Compass Box special edition, which is offered in this version together with a gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: Deep gold to amber.

Nose: Toffee, polished old oak and complex peaty smoke combine to create an intense, multi-layered opening.

Palate: Roasted pecans and raisins meet smoky notes, alongside a balanced blend of sweet and spicy elements.

Finish: Long-lasting and smoky, with lingering oak spice, dried fruit and a delicate sweetness.

Compass Box ULTRAMARINE is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, although a few drops of still water may be added due to its robust 51% ABV. Roasted pecans, mature hard cheese, dark chocolate or desserts featuring raisins and dried fruit complement its sherry-driven and smoky character. This bottling is particularly interesting for comparative tastings with classic or older blended Scotch whiskies, as the evolution of this whisky category is precisely the theme of the Extinct Blends Quartet series. With a limited production run of 5,430 bottles, ULTRAMARINE is also ideal for collections and special whisky tastings.
