Founded in 1826 by James Henderson, the Pulteney Distillery – named after the then newly developed district of Pulteneytown in Wick – is one of Scotland’s northernmost distilleries. Its unique location, accessible only by sea, has shaped its history: barley arrived by ship and whisky left the distillery carried by workers who were also herring fishermen.

A major modernisation took place in 1958 under J&G Stodart Ltd, with the old floor malting facilities making way for today’s visitor centre. Following various takeovers, the distillery eventually came under the ownership of Inver House Distillers, who acquired it in 1995. The launch of Old Pulteney 12 Years Old in 1997 marked the beginning of a new era.

Today, a far cry from its past as a herring fishing port, the Pulteney Distillery remains a proud part of Wick. Under the leadership of Malcolm Waring, the dedicated team produces around 900,000 litres of single malt Scotch whisky annually.

For the Old Pulteney Coastal Series, inspiration for both the name and the production of the malts was drawn from various coastal regions around the world. Depending on the coastal region, the whiskies are given their distinctive finish in casks typical of that coast. In total, this series comprises four whiskies, which are released annually.

The Old Pulteney Coastal Series Pineau des Charentes was inspired by the French coastal region north of Bordeaux. It was matured in Pineau des Charentes casks, which lend this unique whisky its wonderful nuances. It is bottled without chill filtration and without the addition of colouring agents.

Tasting Note

Colour: Light amber.

Nose: Fruity, with notes of ripe peaches, citrus and vanilla.

Palate: Complex, with candied citrus notes, peaches, hints of vanilla and notes of wine oak barrels.

Finish: Long-lasting, well-balanced.
