The Old Pulteney Coastal Series Pineau des Charentes is the first release in the Coastal Series, launched in 2022 by the long-established Old Pulteney Distillery. This Highland single malt Scotch whisky is initially matured in ex-bourbon casks made from American white oak, before undergoing an additional finish in selected Pineau des Charentes casks. These originate from the French coastal region of Charente-Maritime, thus reflecting the maritime theme of the Coastal Series. Pineau des Charentes is a French speciality in which unfermented grape must is blended with Eau-de-vie de Cognac and then matured. The casks previously used for this process impart additional fruity, sweet and nutty notes to the single malt.


The whisky is produced by the Old Pulteney Distillery in Wick on the north-east coast of Scotland, whose whiskies are closely linked to their maritime origins. With the Coastal Series, Old Pulteney deliberately combines this characteristic distillery style with casks from various coastal regions around the world. In this edition, the typical mineral and salty character meets the influence of French Pineau des Charentes casks. The Old Pulteney Coastal Series Pineau des Charentes is bottled at a robust 46% ABV in a 0.7-litre bottle and comes in a matching gift box. The unusual combination of bourbon cask maturation and a French sweet wine finish makes this edition particularly appealing to connoisseurs of experimental wine cask-finished single malts.

Tasting Note

Colour: Amber.

Nose: Acacia honey and vanilla, accompanied by candied orange, soaked raisins and a subtle hint of white pepper.

Palate: Smooth and well-balanced, with raisins, vanilla, caramelised hazelnuts and a hint of nutmeg.

Finish: Long-lasting and nutty, with mineral, salty notes and a subtle spiciness.

The Old Pulteney Coastal Series Pineau des Charentes is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C, although a few drops of still water can bring out additional fruity and nutty notes. Its maritime, fruity profile pairs particularly well with mature cheeses, roasted hazelnuts, air-dried ham or pâtés. Desserts featuring orange, raisins, vanilla or caramelised nuts harmoniously echo the influence of the Pineau des Charentes casks. Thanks to the combination of fruity cask sweetness and mineral-salty notes, this whisky is also ideal for comparative tastings of different Coastal Series bottlings.
