Rum Nation Rare Rums Versailles 2004/2022 is an exceptional bottling from the Rare Rums Collection by the independent Italian bottler Rossi & Rossi, who launched the Rum Nation range back in 1999. The rum was distilled in 2004 from molasses using the traditional Versailles Wooden Pot Still. It is precisely this historic wooden still that gives the spirit a special place within the world of rum. Bourbon casks were initially used for maturation, before the rum acquired additional cask notes through a final stage of finishing in Scotch whisky casks. It was not until 2022 that this long-matured rum was bottled at a robust 59 per cent ABV.


Of particular interest to collectors are the cask numbers 74/95/97, which attest to the small-batch nature of this Rare Rums bottling. No colouring or added sugar has been used, ensuring that the original character of the long-aged distillate remains the focus. The combination of the Versailles Wooden Pot Still, bourbon cask maturation and Scotch whisky cask finish makes this edition an unusual and characterful bottling. With its 2004 vintage, the 2022 bottling and its high ABV, it is aimed in particular at experienced rum connoisseurs and collectors who appreciate distinctive spirits produced in historic stills. Tasting Note

Colour: Deep amber with golden and coppery highlights.

Nose: Floral and expressive, with honey, beeswax and fresh lemon, accompanied by subtle oak notes.

Palate: Fruity, full-bodied and refreshing at the same time, with citrus fruits, beeswax and honey, as well as a powerful, clearly structured spiciness.

Finish: Long-lasting and intense, with lingering notes of citrus, wax and oak.

Rum Nation Versailles 2004/2022 is best enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C. Given its 59% alcohol content, a few drops of still water may be advisable, particularly to further bring out the floral and citrus-driven facets. Roasted almonds, dark chocolate, mature hard cheese or desserts featuring lemon and honey make for subtle accompaniments. Due to its distinctive wooden pot still character and long cask maturation, this Rare Rums bottling is clearly intended for pure enjoyment rather than use in cocktails.
