The Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2021, 12.5% ABV, in a 0.75-litre bottle, is one of the best-known red wines from the renowned Portuguese winemaker Dirk Niepoort and impressively embodies the Niepoort philosophy: characterful, terroir-driven wines of high quality and excellent value for money. The ‘Fabelhaft’ wine range has long enjoyed cult status and owes its name to the well-known stories by Wilhelm Busch. The striking label featuring the raven Hans Huckebein ensures high recognition and makes the wine visually distinctive too.


The grapes for the Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2021 come from the Douro Valley and are deliberately harvested early to preserve freshness, fruitiness and a lively acidity. The cuvée is made from the traditional Portuguese grape varieties Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and other regional varieties. After careful selection, the grapes are destemmed, fermented and then aged. Around 15 per cent of the wine is aged for twelve months in second-use French barriques, which adds complexity without overpowering the fruit. The result is a modern Douro red wine from Portugal that emphasises freshness, minerality and elegance.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2021 presents a vibrant ruby red colour with purple highlights. On the nose, intense aromas of wild berries, blackberries and plums unfold, accompanied by sweetish spicy notes, tangy tea leaves and balsamic undertones. On the palate, the wine is elegant, full-bodied and youthfully fresh with a mineral character. The lively fruit acidity provides a sense of tension, whilst soft tannins lend structure and harmony. The finish is balanced, fruit-driven and pleasantly long-lasting.

The Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2021 pairs superbly with pizza, pasta with spicy meat or vegetable sauces, and grilled pork and beef. This Portuguese red wine is also an excellent accompaniment to Mediterranean stews, tapas and mature cheeses. Thanks to its freshness and versatility, it is ideal for both everyday drinking and convivial evenings with friends. The recommended serving temperature is 16–18 °C.
