The Fettercairn 16 Years Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a long-matured expression from the Scottish Highlands, in which a special selection of malt meets a multi-layered cask maturation. The 2020 release was distilled using chocolate malted barley. This is a more heavily roasted malt, the name of which refers to the degree of roasting rather than the addition of chocolate. Maturation begins in first-fill American ex-bourbon casks, before the whisky is further refined in selected sherry and port casks. This combination of bourbon, sherry and port cask influences was specifically chosen to enhance the distillate’s tropical-fruity character and to lend it additional depth and complexity after 16 years of maturation.


The distinctive distillation process at the Fettercairn Distillery, founded in 1824, plays a key role in defining its characteristic style. The spirit stills feature a characteristic copper cooling ring, through which cold water runs down the outside of the still neck during distillation. This process promotes additional reflux and contributes to Fettercairn’s characteristically light and tropical-fruity distillate style. Each edition of the Fettercairn 16 Years Old is designed to highlight this distillery character through individually tailored maturation. The 2020 bottling thus combines chocolate malted barley with first-fill American ex-bourbon casks and selected sherry and port casks. The Highland single malt is bottled at 46.4% ABV in a generous 1-litre bottle with a gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: An amber-hued honey colour with soft, golden highlights.

Nose: Vanilla and Ingwerer blend with sweet, sun-dried-style raisins.

Palate: Juicy peach, ginger and caramel give way to ripe banana, accompanied by chocolate and Demerara sugar.

Finish: Long-lasting and harmonious, with chocolate, Demerara sugar and a delicate lingering sweetness.

The Fettercairn 16 Years Old 2020 Release is best served neat at room temperature, although a few drops of still water can bring out further fruity and oaky nuances. Dark chocolate, caramelised banana, peach desserts, raisin biscuits or roasted nuts pair particularly well with its profile. Matured hard cheese also offers an interesting contrast to the fruity sweetness and the influences of the sherry and port casks. The 1-litre bottle with its gift box also makes an excellent present for connoisseurs of matured Highland single malts.
