The American Single Malt Whisky Commission’s definition:

Produced from 100 per cent malted barley. Distilled at a single distillery. Mashed, distilled and matured in the USA. Matured in oak casks (smaller than 700 litres). Distilled to no more than 160 proof/80 per cent by volume. Bottled at 80 proof/40 per cent by volume or higher.

Westward Whiskey’s response and interpretation:

Take two-row barley, grown and malted in the North-West. Every drop comes from the distillery in Portland, Oregon. Mashed, distilled and matured in the heart of the American North-West. Maturation takes place in new American, lightly charred, 53-gallon oak casks. Distilled to approx. 142 proof/71% vol. Bottled at 90 proof/45% vol.

The American Single Malt is left to rest for 3 years and is blended into small batches through ‘mingling’ with no more than 10–20 casks.

Neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Tasting Note

Colour: Amber.

Nose: Fruity, vanilla, caramel

Palate: Creamy vanilla, fruit, sweet malt, hints of baked notes, dark chocolate.

Finish: Long-lasting, leather.

Best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or as an Old-Fashioned.
