The Hearach Isle of Harris First Fill Oloroso Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky is produced by the Isle of Harris Distillery in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and is marketed as the distillery’s own bottling. It is produced using 100 per cent Scottish Concerto and Laureate barley. The malt used has a peat content of 12 to 15 ppm, which gives this lightly peated single malt a subtle smokiness without overpowering the character of the cask. It is matured in the village of Ardhasaig on the Isle of Harris in selected first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. The fact that these casks, previously used for Oloroso sherry, are being filled with whisky for the first time allows for a pronounced influence on the colour, structure and character of the distillate.

The Hearach First Fill Oloroso Cask is bottled at 46% ABV in a 0.7-litre bottle and, in this version, is also presented in a gift box. During bottling, the Isle of Harris Distillery refrains from chill filtration and the use of artificial colourings, thereby preserving the whisky’s natural colour and original character. The combination of first-fill Oloroso cask maturation, lightly peated Scottish barley and maturation in the Outer Hebrides defines this special variant of The Hearach. As a lightly smoky Isle of Harris single malt presented in a gift box, this bottling combines Scottish ingredients, sherry cask maturation and the distinctive style of the young island distillery.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm amber with reddish-golden highlights.

Nose: Complex and spicy with cloves, cinnamon and orange, complemented by fresh herbs, creamy white chocolate and a subtle smoky note.

Palate: Full-bodied and multi-layered with walnut shells and subtle wood smoke, followed by dried thyme, roasted orange, vanilla and warming spices.

Finish: Long-lasting and spicy with leather, liquorice, subtle wood smoke and slowly fading cask notes.

The Hearach First Fill Oloroso Cask, presented in a gift box, is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C in a nosing glass or tumbler. A few drops of still water can further bring out the spice, orange and sherry cask notes. Mature hard cheese, roasted walnuts, air-dried ham or dark chocolate pair well with the combination of Oloroso sherry cask and subtle peaty smokiness. Thanks to its gift packaging, this bottling also makes an excellent whisky gift for connoisseurs of lightly peated Scottish single malts.
