As part of the Discovery series, launched by Gordon & MacPhail in 2018, it forms part of a selection of whiskies that highlight different flavour profiles. The series comprises three main categories – Bourbon Cask, Sherry Cask and Smoky – to offer whisky enthusiasts a clear introduction to different flavour profiles.

This Caol Ila pays homage to the distillery’s characteristic smokiness. Characterised by intense peaty notes, gentle sea breezes and a balanced sweetness, it combines the typical Islay characteristics with the Gordon & MacPhail signature. The careful selection of casks enhances the deep flavours and lends it a complex, harmonious structure. Yet it remains approachable and well-rounded, offering an exciting tasting experience for both newcomers and seasoned connoisseurs alike.

Tasting Note

Colour: Pale gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Fresh citrus notes of lemon and lime, followed by a hint of peaty smoke accompanied by a sea breeze.

Palate: Full-bodied and complex, with a combination of rugged peaty notes, charred wood, slightly salty flavours and a subtle spiciness.

Finish: Long and warming, with a lingering smoky and salty note that fades gently.

The Gordon & MacPhail Caol Ila 13 Years Old DISCOVERY is excellent enjoyed neat or with ice to allow the complex flavours to unfold fully. It pairs perfectly with grilled meat, mature cheeses such as Cheddar or Gouda, and seafood such as mussels or grilled salmon.
